An infill development within a semi rural residential area. This project created a two storey dwelling with semi attic accommodation in a predominantly single storey area, of a traditional pitched roof form using natural slate, painted render walls and aluminium/timber composite doors and windows.
Two timber clad single storey ‘drawers” slide out from the main volume, housing the artist's studio and living rooms, providing a contemporary note to the traditional form of dwelling. Enterance to the house is through a break in the garden wall in to a protected entrance courtyard, which also serves as outside studio space, with large glazed doors opening up to the artist's studio.
Using a highly efficient thermal building fabric and energy efficient design, full advantage has been taken of passive solar winter heat gain. through large windows on the southern elevation. A timber frame and blockwork construction, Hoole & Walmsley provided a full specification, general arrangement drawings and details, and liaised with the local builders during construction.
